What about card surcharges?
Home Affairs says it stopped charging surcharges on card, PayPal and UnionPay payments on 1 October 2026. Earlier payments paid the surcharge (about 1.4%). Visa charges did not change because of this. Your bank may still add a foreign-currency fee, so check the total on the payment screen.
FAQ
Is my application lodged if payment fails?
It is submitted only after successful payment.
Can I pay by bank transfer?
Bank transfer is limited and arranged case by case, mainly for some second instalments. BPAY is for Australian bank account holders.
Can I get a refund?
Refunds are not automatic: you request one with the Department's refund form, quoting your transaction reference and receipt numbers. First instalments are generally non-refundable.
