NSW

New arrivals have a maximum of six months to convert. Some drivers must take a practical test, while those from countries with compatible road rules may only convert. The rule applies to people driving on a foreign licence in NSW regardless of arrival date.

Other states and territories

Only two of the other jurisdictions state a fixed deadline, so confirm with your road authority.

State or territory Deadline stated Route
Victoria Six months from when you first live there, including on a temporary visa A requirements checker shows the tests, which may include a Hazard Perception Test
ACT Three months on a permanent visa Licences from non-recognised countries need a pre-learner course, road-rules test and practical assessment
Queensland, WA, SA, Tasmania, NT Varies Recognised countries may only convert. Others need theory and practical tests

Recognition depends on the country that issued your licence, not your nationality. Western Australia says more jurisdictions will join its recognised transfer arrangements for new applications from 31 October 2026.

How long can I drive on my overseas licence?

It varies by state and by whether you are a visitor or a resident. Its NSW figure of three months conflicts with the NSW Government's six months for new arrivals, so rely on your state transport authority. Drivers from recognised countries can usually convert without a theory or driving test, while others sit a knowledge test and a practical test; an eyesight test and fees still apply.
