Who has to give biometrics?

It depends on your visa, your passport and where you apply. The department's program covers set visa types and countries, and you only need to give biometrics if the department asks you in writing. Australian citizens, permanent residents and New Zealand citizens are not required to, and people who qualify for an electronic visa or ETA online are excluded.

What is collected?

  • a digital photo of your face
  • fingerprints from all ten fingers

How does it work?

  1. After you lodge, the department sends a letter titled "Requirement to provide personal identifiers (biometrics)". It tells you where and how to complete the process and includes your Visa Lodgement Number.
  2. Outside Australia, book and attend an Australian Biometric Collection Centre. In Australia, attend a processing office.
  3. You generally have 14 calendar days. If you cannot meet the deadline, explain why to the department.
  4. If biometrics are not completed, the application may be refused.

What about children and special cases?

  • Children under 5 outside Australia, or under 10 in Australia, give only a photo.
  • Anyone under 16, or who cannot understand the process, must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
  • People with facial or fingerprint injuries may need to wait until they heal.
  • If you wear a head covering or glasses, you may need to remove them for the photo, and you can ask for a private room or a same-gender officer.

Can I use my phone?

Some eligible applicants are invited to give a facial photo and passport details through the Australian Immi App. You only get this option if the department invites you, and some people still need to attend a centre.

How much does it cost?

The fee depends on the collection centre and location. Check your request letter and the centre's page.
