Transit visa (subclass 771)
Who can apply?
You must be outside Australia and transiting, with evidence of a confirmed booking to travel on within 72 hours and the correct documents to enter that country. People joining the crew of an eligible ship can also use it if they hold a Maritime Crew visa and sign on within 5 days.
When you may not need one
You may not need a Transit visa if you already hold another valid Australian visa that lets you transit, are a New Zealand passport holder who meets the Special Category visa rules, or are eligible for an ETA, a Visitor visa, an eVisitor or an APEC Business Travel Card, which also allow transit with a longer stay. If you already hold a visa to Australia, being granted a Transit visa will likely end it.
How to apply
Apply online in ImmiAccount from outside Australia. You cannot include family, so each person, including babies on a parent's passport, needs a separate application. See ImmiAccount help.
