Who can apply for the Tourist stream?
You must intend to visit only, have enough money for your stay and not work in Australia. You must be outside Australia when you apply and when it is decided (for the outside stream).
What can you do?
- visit family or friends, holiday, take a cruise or travel for any purpose except business or medical treatment
- study or train for up to 3 months (if study is your main reason for coming, a Student visa may suit you better)
- you cannot work
How long can you stay?
The length is decided case by case, by how long you want to stay and why. Generally 3 months is granted, and up to 12 months in certain circumstances. The visa can be single or multiple entry. Parents of Australian citizens or permanent residents may be granted a visa valid for more than 12 months, but cannot stay more than 12 months in total in any 18-month period and need adequate health insurance. The visa cannot be extended; if you want to stay longer you must apply for another visa. Round-trip cruise time counts as time in Australia.
ETA or eVisitor first
You may be eligible for an Electronic Travel Authority (601) or eVisitor (651), which suit many passports. Check which applies to you before lodging a 600. See the ETA page and eVisitor page.
How long does it take?
See processing times for the official figures for the Tourist stream.
FAQ
Is the 600 the same as a tourist visa?
It has a Tourist stream plus others, so choose the stream that fits.
Can I extend my visa in Australia?
No, but you can apply for another visa.
Can I work?
No. A business visitor can make a short visit but cannot work or sell goods or services.
