Subclass 408 visa (Temporary Activity)
Streams listed
Entertainment, Sporting, Religious Worker, Research, Special Program, Invited Participant and Australian Government Endorsed Events.
Basics
- Most streams need an approved sponsor, nominator or endorsing organisation.
- Requirements: a genuine temporary activity, adequate funds, health and character, appropriate health insurance and intention to comply with conditions.
- A partner or dependent children can be included.
How long can I stay and what does it cost?
Two other sources add detail. Their figures differ in places.
- Stay length: up to 3 months for an invited event, up to 2 years for most other activities, and up to 4 years for Australian Government activities. Up to 2 years for research.
- Sponsor: for stays over 3 months, the organisation generally must be an approved Temporary Activities Sponsor and lodge a nomination. Stays up to 3 months may need only a support letter from the organisation.
- Application charge: A$535 for the main applicant, A$535 for each adult and A$135 for each child, with a further A$700 if you apply in Australia. One-derland's figures (A$430 and A$110) are labelled July 2025, so they are likely out of date after the 1 July 2026 increase.
- Applying in Australia: possible with sponsorship.
- Processing: research-stream files lodged in July 2026 were still undecided in October, so lodge early.
