Check your visa now

VEVO is the official Home Affairs service. You enter your details on the government site, not here. Have your passport and your visa grant number, TRN or visa evidence number ready.

What is a VEVO check?

VEVO stands for Visa Entitlement Verification Online. Home Affairs says it lets visa holders, employers, education providers and other organisations check visa conditions. Visa holders can check their own details and send proof of their conditions to others, such as an employer, a landlord or a foreign government.

What do I need before I start?

  • A travel document: your passport, ImmiCard, convention travel document (Titre de Voyage), Document for Travel to Australia (DFTTA) or PLO56 evidence card.
  • One reference number: a Transaction Reference Number (TRN), a visa grant number or a visa evidence number.
  • Your date of birth.

Where to find your reference number - TRN: you have one if you applied online. Look it up in your ImmiAccount under the "online lodgement summary" screen. - Visa grant number: it is on your visa grant notice, which you may have received by post or email. Use the number for your current visa, because an older grant notice may relate to a visa that is no longer in effect. - Visa evidence number: you may have one if there is a visa label in your passport. Not every passport has a label.

How do I check my visa on the website?

  1. Press the green button above to go to the official VEVO page, and choose Check your own visa details with VEVO.
  2. Choose your type of travel document.
  3. Choose your reference type and type the number.
  4. Enter your date of birth.
  5. Enter your travel document number. Check that you have not typed a capital O instead of a zero, or a capital I instead of the number one.
  6. Enter the country of your document. If you use a Titre de Voyage, enter the nationality shown in it. With an ImmiCard you do not need to choose a country.
  7. Accept the VEVO terms and conditions and select Submit.

VEVO shows your current visa only. It does not show previous visas or new applications that are still being assessed.

You can also use the free myVEVO app from the Apple App Store or Google Play. You set a PIN, and you can use Touch ID or Face ID. The app shows your details and conditions and can email them to an employer or other organisation.

What will the result show?

Home Affairs says VEVO shows your visa details alongside your conditions. These include the visa type, expiry date, must-not-arrive-after date and period of stay. Conditions are the "what you can and can't do" part, such as work or study limits. To understand a condition, see visa conditions explained.

How do I give proof to my employer or school?

Visa holders can send proof of their conditions to others. On your visa details screen, select Send Email. Type the recipient's email address and your own, check both carefully, and send. VEVO contains your personal information, so make sure the address is right. The myVEVO app can email your details directly too.

Why does VEVO say my visa can't be found?

Try these in order:

  1. Check the passport number and reference number for typos.
  2. Use the passport your visa is linked to.
  3. Check the travel document has not expired.
  4. If your visa was granted very recently, wait and try again later. Recent grants can take time to appear.
  5. If you hold a bridging visa and it doesn't show, check your grant letter. Home Affairs notes VEVO cannot show a bridging visa while your main visa has not yet expired.

Some people who migrated before 1990 and haven't travelled since may have no searchable record. They may need an electronic record of their permanent visa. If the result is wrong, compare it with your grant letter and contact Home Affairs. See contact Home Affairs.

What VEVO cannot do

  • It cannot confirm Australian citizenship. Citizens can use a citizenship certificate or an Australian passport.
  • It only shows a visa that is in effect.
  • It does not show previous visas or new applications that are still being assessed.

Can an employer check my visa?

Yes, with your permission. Organisations such as employers and education providers register for an ImmiAccount first, then use VEVO to check visa holders who have given permission. See ImmiAccount vs VEVO.

FAQ

Is a VEVO check free?

Use only the official Home Affairs site, and be careful with any site that charges for a check.

What is a TRN?

A Transaction Reference Number. You have one if you applied online, and you can find it in your ImmiAccount under the online lodgement summary. It is one of the reference numbers VEVO accepts.

Can I do a VEVO check without a passport?

The usual details include passport information. If you can't provide them, contact Home Affairs.

How long does my result stay valid?

Your result is a record from the time you checked. Check again if your visa changes.

Can my landlord do a VEVO check on me?

Home Affairs says visa holders can send proof of conditions to others, including landlords. The registered-organisation route is described for employers and education providers.

What if VEVO shows a condition I don't understand?

See visa conditions explained or the page for your condition.
