Who has an interview?

Most applicants aged 18 to 59 sit the citizenship test. Others may have an interview, including:

  • people aged 16 or 17, who may be asked to show they understand the application, have basic English and understand the responsibilities and privileges of citizenship
  • people aged 60 or over, or with a hearing, speech or sight impairment, who may be asked to show they understand the nature of their application
  • people with a permanent or enduring physical or mental incapacity, whose claim may need verifying

A family member or support person can come with you, and an interpreter can be arranged.

What should I bring?

A photo identity document such as an Australian driver licence, passport or Australian issued proof of age card. If you do not bring photo ID, your appointment is moved to a later date.

How do I prepare?

Read Australian Citizenship: Our Common Bond, listen to its podcast or use the AMEPOnline citizenship modules.

What happens next?

Processing continues and Home Affairs writes to you if it needs more information. If your application is approved and you need to attend a ceremony, an invitation letter arrives about four weeks before it. See the ceremony.
