Steps
- Do not ask your council to replace it.
- Apply to Home Affairs for evidence of Australian citizenship and pay the fee.
- Allow time for processing. Half of applications are decided within 4 days.
If your certificate has an error
If Home Affairs made an error and you tell them within six weeks of receiving the certificate, you may not need to apply for a correction. After six weeks, or if you gave incorrect details, you may need to apply, and the fee can only be refunded when the error was theirs. Never write on or change a certificate.

Can I get a passport without it?
You cannot apply for an Australian passport until you have evidence of citizenship.
