What does NSW say?

  • It applies to parents on temporary resident visas, naming the 457 and 482.
  • Fees depend on age. Exemptions or refunds are possible depending on circumstances.
  • Some public primary schools run International Student Programs, generally offering only two years of primary study, with extra eligibility rules and possible English requirements.

If your child is a dependant, see student guardian visa and student visa work hours.

How do the states differ?

Rules are set by each state or territory, and they change. Treat it as a guide only and confirm with your education department.

  • New South Wales: children of temporary visa holders usually pay tuition fees, with exemptions only in specific circumstances.
  • South Australia and Western Australia: government schools charge fees to many temporary visa holders. Waivers or reductions may be available on hardship or low income.
  • Australian Capital Territory: fees are waived only in limited cases, such as certain listed occupations with an ACT employment contract.
  • Tasmania: tuition is exempt for dependants of 482 holders, but school levies apply.
  • Queensland: school-age dependants of Student visa holders may be exempt from tuition fees for the length of the main student's course. Temporary Residents Admissions (TRA) handles other visa types. Parents must tell TRA in writing within 7 days of a change in visa or enrolment.
