Student visa work hours (48 hours a fortnight)
On this page
What is the work limit?
- Up to 48 hours per fortnight when your course is in session.
- Counted over any 14-day period, not per week.
- All jobs count together.
When is there no limit?
- Master's by research and doctoral students, and their families.
- Scheduled course breaks, which count as out of session.
- After your course finishes, while you still hold a valid visa.
When can't I work?
Before your course starts you generally cannot work. Exam periods usually count as in session.
Student Guardian visa holders
A 590 holder cannot work at all. See the 590 guide.
What happens if I go over?
Working over the limit breaches condition 8105. That can lead to cancellation and affect later visa applications. If you think you have breached your conditions, or you get a notice, get advice promptly.
Family members
Some family members carry condition 8104 instead of 8105. Check your grant notice and how to check your conditions on VEVO. Since 2 October 2026 most students cannot include family. See the changes.
