First steps

  1. Check your expiry date and conditions. See visa expiry date.
  2. Look at your situation: when it expires, whether you have been refused another visa, and whether you have a no further stay condition 8503.
  3. Explore options before the visa ends.

Can I apply for a new visa?

Possibly, but there may be limits on applying while in Australia. If you lodge a valid application before your visa ends, a bridging visa usually keeps you lawful. See bridging visas. Since 2 October 2026, most temporary visa holders cannot apply for a Student visa onshore. See Student visa changes.

What if it has already expired?

Bridging visa C is granted when you lodge an onshore application while unlawful (see Bridging visa C).

Can I leave?

You can leave at any time. Permanent residents should read about the Resident Return visa.
