Apply for a tax file number (TFN) as a visa holder
Who can apply online?
People in Australia with a valid work-rights visa linked to their passport or travel document. This includes working holiday makers (417, 462) and Temporary Activity (408), and New Zealanders get a work-rights visa on arrival. Check your visa and conditions in VEVO.
Who cannot?
Visas with condition 8101, 8103 or 8116 (no work) cannot use the online method. Without a valid work-rights visa, permanent migrants use the Australian residents application, and temporary visitors use the paper form for people living outside Australia. See condition 8101.
What do I need?
A work-rights visa, to be in Australia and a postal address in Australia. No documents are sent to the ATO.
How long and how much?
Free. Within 28 days of the ATO receiving the application, posted to your address. After 28 days, contact the ATO with your receipt ID.
