Who can apply?

You must be one of these:

  • an Australian permanent resident
  • a former Australian permanent resident whose last permanent visa was not cancelled
  • a former Australian citizen who lost or renounced citizenship

If you are already in Australia as a permanent visa holder you do not need this visa unless you want to leave and re-enter as a permanent resident.

155 or 157?

Both are Resident Return visas. The travel facility can be up to 5 years depending on your circumstances. In general the 155 is for people who have lived in Australia for at least two of the last five years, or who have substantial ties to Australia. The 157 is for people who have spent less time in Australia and have a compelling reason for being away.

Character and health

Expect to provide police certificates for countries where you have lived 12 months or more in the last 10 years, and health checks if you are asked.

Cost and time

A$1,475 to apply online. A lower charge applies from 1 July 2026 for eligible Pacific Island and Timor-Leste citizens. Earlier figures of A$475, A$490 or A$185 are out of date. See processing times for the official figures.

FAQ

Can I travel as often as I like?

Yes, until the travel facility on the visa expires.

Can I apply from overseas?

Yes, being outside Australia when your facility has expired is the usual situation.

What if I do not meet the residence test?

Substantial ties to Australia may still qualify you for the 155.

Do I need this visa if I am a citizen?

No. Citizens cannot apply.
