Professional Year program
What it is
A work-readiness program run by accredited providers. For IT, the Australian Computer Society (ACS) accredits the providers, and other professions use their own bodies such as CPA Australia and Engineers Australia.
Who can join the IT program?
- a valid passport and a visa with full work and study rights, valid for 365 days from the start date
- an IT-related bachelor degree or higher from an Australian institution that meets the Australian study requirement
- English at Competent level, taken within the past three years (for example IELTS 6.0 in all bands)
- an interview with the accredited provider
Does it add points?
Yes. Completing a Professional Year in Australia is worth 5 points on the points test for the 189, 190 and 491. See points test explained and the points calculator. The ACS also treats the IT program as equivalent to one year of relevant work experience for skills assessment.
What does it cost?
Each accredited provider sets its own fees, so compare several.
